Pete Davidson checked into a rehab facility to receive treatment for PTSD and borderline personality disorder, according to People Magazine.

The Saturday Night Live alum has long been an outspoken advocate for mental health treatment.

Davidson has spoken about being diagnosed with PTSD, following the death of his father, who was killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. Davidson also suffers from it borderline personality disordera mental illness that affects the way a person handles their emotions.

The more we talk about it [mental health], the more we normalize it, said Thea Gallagher, PsyD, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at NYU Langone Health. It is so amazing that we can have these conversations as if someone has an illness or disease that they are receiving treatment for. We don’t blame anyone for their physical health, but we put a personal burden or pressure on their mental health.

According to World Health OrganizationMental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex continuum, experienced differently by one person to another, with varying degrees of difficulty and distress, and potentially vastly different social and clinical outcomes.

Experts say anyone can seek mental health help, and people don’t need to wait until they’re in pain to seek mental health treatment.

More than 20% of adults in the US live with a mental illness, says the CDC. That is one in five people. The same percentage of adults live with forms of anxiety or depression.

So many people suffer in silence and have their quality of life negatively impacted, Gallagher said. If you’re in pain and struggling, it’s important to get the help you need, and you may need it more than once in different seasons of your life and at different points in your life.

Mental health is something that affects huge numbers of people. But many people can still feel stigmatized for discussing mental health issues, which is why experts say it’s so helpful for public figures and celebrities to be open about their mental health.

We have to continue to destigmatize it. We see that mental health is not a youth issue, but it is less stigmatized in youth, Gallagher said. The truth is, there are many older people who need mental health care and resources, but because it is stigmatized, it may be difficult for them to seek treatment.

While rehab or a mental health facility is an option for people, not everyone has to enroll in a separate facility to take care of their mental health. A wide variety of mental health options are available.

One of the most popular forms of treatment is psychotherapy, which is an umbrella term that covers a broad spectrum of different methods and styles. The basic concept involves exploring thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with a trained and licensed professional.

Some mental illnesses can be treated with medication. While medications won’t cure a mental illness, they can help with symptom management.

Support groups are another method of treatment, where members guide each other towards a common goal of recovery. Groups are made up of non-mental health professionals, but are usually led by someone with a license.

In a minority of cases, hospitalization or rehabilitation may be required to monitor an individual more closely or if a person poses a danger to themselves or the community.

Talking to your doctor or talking to a psychologist or psychiatrist can be a great first step in determining what treatment might be right for you.

One thing I always say is if you are asking the question Do I need mental health care? get an appraisal, Gallagher said. If it’s anything you feel, from settling unfinished business to maybe drinking more than you want to, unresolved anger if you’re curious, just ask.
